LAROCHELLE residence

This residential project demonstrates how even the simplest design gesture -paint- can transform the experience of a home. The palette was designed not to compete with existing finishes, but to harmonize with them, creating flow from one space to the next and reducing visual noise.

Larochelle Residence

Colour Consultation / Remote / Montreal

the starting point

The LaRochelle residence is a single family home in Montreal; a space its owner wanted to feel like a true sanctuary. The existing palette, a grey that had run throughout the main floor and up the stairwell, had begun to feel heavy and outdated. The space didn't breathe. It didn't reflect the family living in it.

The client knew what she wanted to feel when she walked through the door: Calm. Peaceful. Timeless. Not a trend, not a moment; something that would last.

the scope

With a full renovation not yet on the horizon, the decision was made to begin where impact would be felt most immediately: Paint. The scope covered all walls visible from the entryway -the main living areas, the kitchen, and the stairwell- creating a cohesive experience from the moment you step inside. Lighting was identified as a longer-term priority, with the goal of carrying a consistent design language throughout the home over time.

This is a project about restraint used wisely. Not doing everything at once, but doing the right thing first.

the approach

Working remotely, the process began with a detailed discovery conversation; understanding not just the physical space, but how the client wanted to inhabit it. The brief was clear: clean, quiet, and coherent. A palette that wouldn't compete with what was already there, but would finally allow the home to feel unified.

The selected palette moves through soft whites and carefully chosen neutrals; colours that amplify natural light, settle the eye, and create a sense of flow from one space to the next. Every tone was chosen to work with the architecture, not against it, so that nothing announces itself and everything simply feels right.

the outcome

What changed in the LaRochelle residence wasn't decorative; it was experiential. The same rooms, the same furniture, the same light fixtures, but the home now has a coherence it lacked before. Walls that once felt like a constraint became a backdrop that lets the space breathe.

This project reflects a core belief of the studio: That the most powerful design decisions are often the quietest ones. You don't always need more. Sometimes you need the right choice, made with intention.

This project was completed remotely through Alleyne & Co. Design's Colour Consultation service.
